Common Baby Sleep Related Mistakes

SleepyBaba would like to share a few common baby sleep related mistakes with you today

Top 1:

I will just drag her bedtime later, so she can sleep through the night

By doing so, this may mean your little one will be going to bed in an overtired state. Well, tonight she may not have any night wakings because she is too tired to fuss about anything. However, when your little one is overtired, their sleep may not be very restorative, meaning their sleep cycle will be short. Therefore, instead of night wakings, you may create another sleep issue Early waking - waking up at 4-5am!

Top 2:

She won’t sleep overnight, so I will just keep her up during nap time so she will sleep tonight.

Once your little one is overtired, they can get cranky, fussy, grizzly, and they will to put up a fight during bedtime - Bedtime struggle. If you eliminate your little one’s nap during daytime, surely she will be tired enough to fall asleep tonight! However, your little one may not be able to stay away until your set bedtime, meaning she could be going to bed very early in the evening/late afternoon - too-early bedtime which could lean to early waking. Remember, sleep deprived baby will fall asleep early and wake up early!

Top 3:

Finally she naps, I don’t wants to wake her up! or He did not sleep well last night, I will let him sleep until he wants to wake up.

By doing this you will only create an irregular daily routine for your little one, so your little one will be more likely to miss her next natural sleep window. You cannot control what time your little one sleeps, but you can control what time your little one wakes up. By waking your little one at the right time (according to age appropriate wake time), this will train your little one to fall asleep quickly at roughly the same time everyday. Remember- Establishing a regular daily sleep and eat routine is very essential for your little one as your little one thrives with routine.

Top 4: His sleep issue will disappear when he grows up, so I will just wait for it

Unfortunately, many studies have shown that babies do not just grow out of sleep issues. If they have sleep issues at 1 year old and nothing is done, they are likely to continue to have sleep issues until 4 years old.

Top 5: My baby must be hungry that’s why he keeps waking up at night!”- Introduce solids too early.

“WHO and UNICEF recommend that introduction of nutritionally-adequate and safe complementary (solid) foods at 6 months together with continued breastfeeding up to 2 years of age or beyond.”

“The American Academy of Pediatrics advocates waiting until your baby is at least 6 months old to introduce solids, and definitely not introducing solid food before the age of 4 months.”

Introducing solids too early can increase the risk of food being sucked into the airway, potentially causing your little one to get too many or not enough calories/ nutrients- hungry or overfeeding will cause discomfort in your little one leading to disruptive sleep. Moreover, overfeeding may increase the risk of obesity at a later stage.

However, If you have the permission from your GP or pediatrician, then what we will strongly recommend you to follow their advice:

𝟰 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝗼𝗹𝗱 (𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟳 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝘀 𝗼𝗹𝗱):

Start with simple foods such as baby rice, pear, peach and pumpkin.

Always feed your child with milk first then offer solids, and it should occur straight after your child has the milk, DO NOT wait for an hour before offering your child solids.

Remember to increase solids very slowly.

𝟱 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝗼𝗹𝗱:

You can safely start introducing solids to your child now, if your child is ready.

You should always offer your baby milk first, then solid at this age.

You can slowly introduce solids 1 to 2 times per day, but not 3 times in order to prevent milk-food imbalance.

Start with foods like baby rice, fruits and vegetables.

Avoid food, such as avocado or raw banana until your little one is 7months.
